***After this interview with Fox 10, Higley Football later learned that there actually was another young lady who played for Higley Football 13 years ago, when HHS first opened.  Her name is Danielle Jones and was a Higley Football player for two years!***

GILBERT, Ariz. –A freshman at Higley High School in Gilbert is making history: she’s the team’s first female player ever.

Skyla McCoy-Dieringer may look small, but she can deliver a tackle. She plays linebacker, corner and safety and contributes to the team’s assists and tackles each game.

“My dad used to play it and I thought it might be something different to try,” said McCoy-Dieringer. “[My parents] are very supportive, they’re still supportive of me.”

When some girls try to play with the boys, they aren’t always received with open arms. At Higley, that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

“They all look at her as a little sister. They take care of her around school, on the field, off the field,” said Coach Don Rosenberger.  Click Here to read the full article on Fox 10.
